Frequently Asked Questions
Residential FAQ's
How often should I have my garage door serviced?
We recommend a garage door service once a year for standard use.
If the door is operated more frequently, we recommend every six months.
Regular service helps prevent unexpected breakdowns, extends the life of your door and opener, and ensures safe operation.
Why is my garage door making loud noises?
Noisy garage doors are often caused by worn rollers, loose hardware, lack of lubrication, or aging/un-adjusted springs. A standard service can quickly identify, correct, and quiet most garage door issues. If any parts are broken, we have the ability to replace them the same day for additional material/labor costs.
How long does a garage door typically last?
With proper maintenance, a garage door can last 15-30 years, depending on usage, quality of materials, and climate.
What should I do if my garage door won't open or close?
First, check the remote batteries and safety sensors. Next, ensure that all breakers are on and that there is power to the garage. If the problem continues and there is power to the garage, STOP using any part of the garage door and contact a professional-forcing it /touching components can cause further damage or safety risks.
How much does a new garage door cost?
The cost varies based on door size, material, glass, color, insulation, and installation requirements. Due to the multiple factors involved, numbers aren’t readily available and are unique to every situation. Contact us today for a Free Estimate of your garage door system! We will bring the showroom to you!!!
Can I replace just one garage door panel?
In some cases, yes. Panel replacement depends on the door model, age, and availability of matching panels. A free visit with our estimator can determine if a section is available or if a full door replacement is needed!
Are garage door repairs dangerous to do myself?
Yes. Garage doors use high-tension torsion springs and heavy components that can cause serious bodily injury if handled incorrectly. We strongly recommend professional repairs through a licensed and insured garage door company!
How do I know if my garage door springs are broken?
Common signs include a door that won’t open, a door that only opens six inches, cables hanging off either side of the door, opening unevenly, or if it made a loud, unexpected bang and refuses to open. Springs are one solid piece (with some systems having two or more), with a mounting bracket around the center of the door and screws mounting to the tube on the opposite end. If there is any separation between these two points, the spring is broken. Broken springs should only be replaced by trained professionals. We refuse and are unable to sell the spring material for anyone attempting to replace themselves.
Do you offer emergency garage door repairs?
Yes. We offer weekend emergency service and same-day emergency service for garage doors that are stuck, damaged, trapping vehicles, or unsafe to operate. There will be an emergency cost applied to the standard service call price.
Should I choose an insulated garage door?
Insulated doors help improve energy efficiency, reduce noise, and add durability, especially if your garage is attached to your home or used as a workspace. If not already insulated, insulation can be added to the door. NHCD can only provide kits that are sold through the garage door manufacturer if available. This can also be done yourself or with a handyman. If done yourself, we highly recommend a service call to adjust the door for the new weight added, especially in the springs.
How long does garage door installation take?
Most standard garage door installations are completed within 3-6 hours, depending on the door type and site conditions. In most cases, no more than a day on site. If it is a bigger project (multiple commercial doors/motors) it can be a multi-day project. All timeframes and the number of days installation requires are discussed when scheduling.
Why does my garage door reverse before closing?
This usually happens when the safety sensors are misaligned or blocked by objects. Check for any obstructions, damage, and inspect wiring. The sensors should be solid in color on both sides of the door. If any flashing occurs or lights are out, there is an issue with sensors. It is common for sensors to have two different colors (commonly green and amber) to signal that one is the sender and the other the receiver. Some models also have two of the same colored light on the sensors.
Can I use my existing garage door opener with a new door?
Often yes, as long as the opener has up-to-date safety features as well as no broken components. We’ll inspect the opener and advise before installation of the new garage door.
How can I extend the life of my garage door?
Regular annual maintenance from a garage door professional, addressing small issues early, and replacement of worn parts can significantly extend your door’s lifespan.
Do you work on automatic gate openers?
We do NOT service or install automated gate openers. Our company focuses solely on garage doors and garage door opener systems. Automated gate openers fall outside our scope of services.
